PERTH TO ESPERANCE ROAD TRIP GUIDE

Perth - Esperance Road Trip Guide

It’s no secret that my favourite place in the whole world is Western Australia. Western Australia is such a stunningly beautiful part of the country. There is so much to see and explore in Western Australia, but today I’m focusing specifically on south corner of Western Australia between Perth & Esperance.  My itinerary is for two weeks of travel which I highly recommend on spending as your minimum amount of travel time – 3 weeks is even better. The order of locations can be done in reverse order but this is my preferred travel route so you can get the longer driving times out of the way at the start of your trip. Here is your complete Perth to Esperance road trip guide.

PERTH – DAYS 1-2

Perth is such a beautiful city with a vibrant city centre & lined some incredible beaches. There are lots of thing to get up to around Perth so a minimum of two day here is recommended. Some things to do here in the city centre include King’s Park, Elizabeth Quay and be sure to check out the Crawley Edge Boatshed for some fun photos. Don’t miss out on the gorgeous beaches around Perth including Cottesloe, City Beach & Port Beach.

Where to stay:

High End – For the newest and most luxurious hotel in Perth, you just can’t pass up Crown Towers Perth. The whole building is upscale and luxurious with incredible views from your room. And the pool there is just unlike any other, including an adults only section.

Mid Range – QT Perth is a beautiful, swanky hotel located right in the heart of the city. The location just doesn’t get much better than this hotel.

Budget – A great budget option is the Perth City YHA. Here you can find dorm room or private rooms for a great price. There’s a great social atmosphere here and even an outdoor pool.

ESPERANCE – DAYS 3-7

Perth – Esperance driving time: 8 hours

Get ready because the Perth to Esperance drive is very long and uneventful. On the way, stop at the Wave Rock to check out this incredible rock that has been carved out by wind over thousands of years.

There are so many incredible beaches around Esperance, you’re absolutely spoiled for choice. I recommend on spending a couple nights in Esperance town & a couple nights camping in Cape Le Grand National Park (book this in advance) next to the famous Lucky Bay Beach. About an hour away is my favourite beach in the area called Wharton Beach in Duke of Orleans Bay.

Where to stay:

High End – The most popular accommodation in Esperance is without a doubt the Esperance Chalet Village. Since this hotel gotten popular on Instagram it tends to book up pretty quickly. But it is a beautiful and relaxing place to stay in Esperance.

Mid Range – The Alexander Drive B&B is the best choice for mid range accommodation. It has all you basic needs, it’s located close to the town centre and includes a delicious breakfast.

Budget – For budget accommodation your best bet is camping at the Lucky Bay Campgrounds in  Cape Le Grand National Park. Here you’re located right next to one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia with kangaroos frequently jumping around the campsite.

ALBANY DAYS 8-9

Esperance – Albany driving time: 5 hours

Albany was an unexpected surprise for me. The first time I did this road trip I only had Albany as a quick stop but quickly realized how incredible some of the beaches around here are. I knew this time I had to stay a couple nights and explore this area. Albany truly has some of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen. I highly recommend going to Little Beach & Frenchman Bay.

Where to stay:

High End – You’ll receive exceptional service and amenities at the Beach House At Bayside. You’ll have a luxurious stay here with everything you need and a delicious breakfast.

Mid Range – The Best Western Albany provides you with a fresh, clean atmosphere and generous sized rooms. The location is ideal, and the service is excellent.

Budget – For a budget hotel in a great location, Six Degrees Boutique Hotel is the perfect place to stay. The prices here are less than a hostel but still provide all the basic amenities for a comfortable stay.

DENMARK DAYS 10-11

Albany – Denmark driving time: 40 minutes

Denmark is a small town with a lot to offer. Spend two days here to truly experience the area. You’ll find some amazing and unique beaches here along with some great wineries & breweries. While you’re here discover the Green Pools beach & Elephant Rocks which are some of the most unique beaches I’ve been to. My favourite winery/brewery in the area is the Boston Brewing co. Head here for lunch for some great food and delicious beer in a beautiful outdoor setting.

Where to stay:

Mid Range – For a peaceful & relaxing place to stay I recommend the Floating Forest Retreat. This is an entire self contained cabin which has a fully equipped kitchen, a fireplace and books & games to keep you entertained. It’s located amongst a surrounding forest truly giving you a tranquil & peaceful experience.

Budget – With not a lot of choices for budget accommodation in Denmark, the best value you can find is at Christina’s @Denmark.  Here you’ll get an entire apartment for less than $100 per night. Be sure to book this one early as it tends to fill up quickly.

MARGARET RIVER DAYS 12-13

Denmark – Margaret River driving time: 4 hours

I absolutely adore Margaret River and every time I go back I wish I would have spent more time there. Margaret River is one of Australia’s best wine regions. There are so many incredible wineries to discover but also chocolate, cheese, breweries & ice cream all locally made. There are also some amazing beaches to discover including Eagle Bay, Hamlin Bay, Castle Rock & Canal Rocks. For a hidden gem be sure to check out the Injidup Natural Spa at high tide for an incredible & unique natural rock pool.

Pro tip: Find wild and friendly stingrays at the stunning Hamlin Bay Beach. The stingrays come every morning and swim around for a couple hours as the fishermen come in with their fish.

Where to stay:

High End – Smiths Beach Resort is a beautiful beach side hotel with stylish accommodation. Enjoy incredible ocean views while you receive incredible service and high end hotel features. You can enjoy the multiple pools at the resort or head down to the beach during your Margaret River stay.

Mid Range – Eight Willows Retreat is the perfect place to stay in the Margaret River region. It’s located in a central location close to a lot of my favourite wineries. The accommodation is an entire self contained chalet with all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay. With excellent value for money I highly recommend staying here.

Budget – For well priced accommodation with all the basics, Surfpoint Resort has everything you need. It’s located in a central Margaret River with beaches nearby. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning & a TV with a communal kitchen to use.

FREMANTLE DAY 14

Margaret River – Fremantle driving time: 3 hours

Fremantle is located just outside of Perth and a perfect place to end your road trip. There are a lot of great bars, breweries & restaurants in Fremantle. While you’re there make sure you check out Little Creatures Brewery & the rainbow containers for sunset. If you have an extra couple nights I suggest spending a night in Busselton, on your way back to Fremantle and a full day at Rottnest Island. Busselton has the longest wooden jetty in the Southern Hemisphere and is just a generally chilled, beautiful town to spend a night. Rottnest Island is only a half hour ferry ride from Fremantle. There you’ll find more amazing beaches and the cutest little animals – Quokkas. Make sure you get a #quokkaselfie while you’re there!

Pro tip: For a not so well known shipwreck that you can snorkel round just meters from the beach, head to Coogee Beach and look for the Omeo Wrek Dive.

Where to stay:

Mid Range – The Esplanade Hotel Fremantle provides you with modern rooms in the heart of Fremantle. The rooms are spacious and comfortable with all modern amenities.

Budget – Federal Boutique Hotel is a great budget accommodation option priced lower than a hostel. This hotel is located in the heart of Fremantle, there’s a bar and restaurant located downstairs. I highly recommend staying here if you’re looking incredible value for money.
